Book Review: Three Wishes

Author: Liane Moriarty

Summary from Goodreads:
This is the story of three triplet sisters, Lyn, Cat and Gemma. We follow the course of their lives during the year and the numerous twists and turns it takes. A light hearted read that employs sibling rivalry and comedy at the same time.

Personal Review:
I picked up this book based off reading a couple of others that I have read by Liane Moriarty. While I liked the book, it was not my favorite by her. That said though, the story had its funny moments and she does a good job writing to help you understand the characters.

In this particular story, there is a lot going on in each of the lives of the triplets. Despite everything though, they somehow lead back to the three of them and the connection that they will always have. I am not sure that I felt the story was fully resolved at the end, but it was interesting to see how it all lead up to the story in the beginning.

Book Review: Crazy Horse

Thursday, August 27, 2015

Author: Mari Sandoz

Summary from Goodreads:
This book follows Crazy Horse, the infamous leader in the Battle of Little Bighorn. The book covers his entire life from childhood, all the way through the end. The story is one of controversy, of love, of leadership and what it meant to be a Native American at the time.

Personal Review:
This was an interesting book. I enjoyed the author’s ability to capture the perspective and politics of what happened at the time of Crazy Horse’s life. I am not an expert on these topics by any means, but I grew up not terribly far from a number of the places where the stories happened. It was interesting to see the dynamics between not only the people in the tribe and the new settlers, but also those of other tribes.

This book was a good for helping me to understand a culture that I don’t know a lot about. I appreciated it very much for that. I think that without knowing much background, I am not able to make distinction between those items that are truly fact and those that may be slightly fictionalized. That said though, I am a better person for having had a chance to read about a person who was iconic in shaping the future of the world around him.

Book Review: Mt. Vernon Love Story

Monday, August 24, 2015

Author: Mary Higgins Clark

Summary from Goodreads: This is the story of George and Martha Washington and the love that brought their families together. An inside look at America’s first president and his life, the book is a quick read with a historical perspective. The story centers on his Mt. Vernon home.

Personal Review:
I enjoyed this book. I like to learn about people in history and this also included a romance, so it was right up my alley. I also liked that a number of the places that were mentioned in this book are not far from where I live.

I think the author does a good job showing the challenges that the couple had to be together. In ‘Patsy’s’ (Martha’s) situation, she is dealing with loss from her first husband and two young children. For George, the loss of a past love and the everyday stress that he experiences in the work place. They find comfort in each other and way to get through the challenging times.
