Greyhounds: Why Adopting One Was One of My BEST Life Decisions Ever

Sunday, October 9, 2016

Hi Everyone!

Just wanted to stop by today with a post about Greyhounds. I know this is a book blog, but this is a topic that I feel very strongly about and I wanted to take a minute to share with you. My husband and I adopted Kuiper (our retired racing greyhound) 4 years ago in July. Little did we know how much he would change our lives. I cannot even tell you how much joy he brings to my life everyday! It was the best decision ever. I never really had been around dogs and was incredibly nervous. Turns out he is such good boy!

Here are few other things you may not know:

Myth: Greyhounds don’t make good pets because they are hyperactive
Fact: Retired racing dogs and even those who have never raced are usually lazy around the house. While they can sprint quickly, they are not known for their endurance.

Myth: People who own cats or small dogs should never adopt a greyhound because they will kill small animals.
Fact: Even greyhounds that were taught to chase lures can be cat and small animal friendly. Many greyhound rescues test their dogs for cat friendliness and socialize them with other small dog before they adopt them out. Kuiper actually lives with two cats!

Myth: Greyhounds are hard to housetrain
Fact: Many greyhounds that are adopted from a racing background are already crate trained. When they are brought into a house, they learn quickly that they shouldn’t soil any indoor areas, especially if you continue the crating.

If you have ever wanted a gentle dog and are looking for a companion, I would encourage you to check out the greyhound breed! I am always here if you have any questions :)

Take care!

  1. My hubby and I really want one. The rescue around here won't let you adopt one with kids under five so we have to wait a few years but we are definitely planning on one. Kuiper is so cute! Is he affectionate or cuddly at all?

    1. He is sometimes! He likes to be beside me with his head resting in me when I read. That said I have seen greyhounds who were very aloof to ones who will paw at you when you don't pay attention to them. Think it depends on the dog :)
