Book Review: Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

Author: Ransom Riggs

Summary from Good Reads:

This is the story of Jacob Portman, who hears stories from his grandfather, Jacob Portman. When his grandfather passes away, it is up to Jacob to discover the meaning behind his grandfather’s last words as well as his letters. He is soon led to Miss Peregrine’s home for peculiar children.  Miss P and the children known as ‘peculiars’ both have special abilities. For example, Miss P can shape into a falcon or the children look young even though they are many years old. An interesting book about magic and abilities.

Personal Summary:

I have to say this book was not what I expected it to be. I am not really clear on what I thought was going to happen, but it was different than what I thought would. I thought it was well written and I appreciated the letters and the pictures throughout the story.
I think it was the story itself that just seemed a little strange to me. I guess being unfamiliar with the setting, just getting to know the characters, it was a lot to take in. I thought that there were vivid descriptions in some parts of the book, while others seemed simple. I appreciated the balance, but the story left me confused rather than my normal ‘wanting to read more’.

I am not sure though that I will read the next two books. I like the idea, but maybe this was just one that is not for me.  I can understand the draw to this book and for those who love a magical story, this is the book for you.

Happy Reading!
