Talking About Novel Trends

1. Knit Lit is huge, i.e. novels about people who knit, but I’ve never actually seen anyone read a knitting book, which leads me to wonder, who is really reading these books. Homeschool moms? Nursing home residents? State prisoners? And why is knitting so big in novels but not crotcheting? Or needlework?

2. Young Adults novels are extremely popular, which means the market is going to be glutted and suddenly YA will be dead and no editors will be buying them. So what does that mean for young readers when there’s no more YA? Will they go from “Good Night, Moon” straight to  erotica. And what happens when all these young adults grow up? Since there’s no more books about people in their early twenties (chick lit) will they have no choice but to settle for knit lit? Will knit lit one day rule the world?

3. Why do people want to read about romances with supernatural creatures? I don’t get it. Especially the werewolf thing. It’s like being secretly attracted to your dog.

4. Speaking of dogs, it seems like every talking dog novel gets a six-figure advance. Same with dystopian novels. How about a talking dog who predicts the coming dystopia? Would that land an author a twelve-figure advance?

5. What’s up with bonnet rippers, i.e. Amish romances? Do the Amish read them? If all books turn into e-books then what will the Amish readers do?

 

6. Why isn’t there a genre for country music lovers? Seems like an untapped market to me. Country music always tells a story so there’s already a relationship to novels and it’d be a cinch to market. The titles already crackle with drama: “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off; Mama Get a Hammer (There’s a Fly on Papa’s Head),” “She Got the Ring and I got the Finger.”

7. Wives are the hot new thing in book titles: The Silent Wife, (as if), The Shoemaker’s Wife, The Reliable Wife, The Last Original Wife, The Headmasters Wife and The Unwilling Wife.  (Sounds like last Saturday night at my house.)

8. Husbands, by the way, are not completely left out. One of my favorite books this year was The Husband’s Secret. Here are some other husband titles: The Husband School (one hopes back rubs are part of the curriculum) Rent a Husband and The Perfect Husband (a fantasy novel, of course).

9. Almost everyone knows that Fifty Shades of Grey made erotic romance lit even hotter, but did you also know it has paved the way for a rash of billionaire books? There’s the Billionaire’s Obsession, Forbidden Disclosure (A Billionaire in Disguise), Bedding the Billionaire, The Billionaire’s Wife (two birds with one stone) The Billionaire’s Bride of Vengeance, the Billionaire’s Mistress and let’s not forget The Billionaire’s Pregnant Mistress. (Shrewd move, girlie.)

10. Many titles enjoy being a girl, particularly after the success of Gone Girl. You have The Girl on the Train, Girl Missing, Clever Girl, Mafia Girl and The Girl Who Bit Back. (Maybe because she’s tired of being in so many novels?)

Finally, related to girl titles are girlfriend titles which include Girlfriends Forever, Secret Girlfriend, One Week Girlfriend and the oh-so-relatable book Life With a Fire-Breathing Girlfriend.

Book Review: Not My Life (Time Shifters #5)

Personal Review:Do you enjoy books about time travel? Do you wish you could back in time and change the outcome of things? Then this may be the book for you.

In this book, we are meet a group of teens who come to the rescue of an old friend who has been wrongly accused of murder. The teens must use their technology, knowledge from the future, and everything they can think of to help him. The problem is that they are not sure how to make him believe what they are saying.

The book was a quick read with a plot that kept moving. I liked the characters and in some ways they were like the 'stereotypes' of who they were. That said, I think that they had the best of intentions and wanted to do good by their friend.

I found the book an interesting read and I am glad that I had the opportunity to read it.

Book Review: The Secret Language of Dogs

I really enjoyed everything about this book. First and foremost, there are adorable pictures of dogs, puppies, and other canine friends throughout. I am a big dog person and I loved looking at them.

The second part of this book was that it was written in an easy to read, but informative way. I really appreciated the opportunity to learn more about what different things that dogs do mean. For example, what does it mean when your dog is wagging his tail. I enjoyed learning how the animals 'communicate."

I would recommend this book for those who haven't spent much time around dogs or for those thinking about getting/adopting a dog. There is a lot of good insight here. It was also worth the read for those of us who have had a dog. Thank you for the opportunity to review this book.

Top Ten Tuesday: Books To Read At Book Club

Hi Everyone! 

Just stopping by with another Top Ten Tuesday!  This week's topic is Top Ten Tuesday is about book clubs. I have thought about joining a couple of book clubs and been invited, but I just haven't had a chance to follow up on them. However, if I did these are the books that I would be suggesting to the club had I joined:

1) Small Great Things-Jodi Picoult
This is her latest and I have so many great things to say about it!

2) All of the books written by Elin Hilderbrand
I love all of her books and they are fun summer reads, so during that time of year you could really enjoy them.

3) The Richest Man in Town
My all time favorite book. So many people just haven't read it and it makes me really sad. 

4) LumberJanes
It's my favorite graphic novel. I know that alot of people think that they are not for them and that is fine, but this one is great. I just love it. 

5) The Diary of Anne Frank
Another favorite of mine. This book just makes me think about so many things and I feel like it would be a great conversation.
